NorthStar Medical Radioisotopes has begun routine commercial-scale production of noncarrier-added actinium-225 (Ac-225) using electron-accelerator technology

The announcement marks a first in the radiopharmaceutical industry, with NorthStar reporting weekly production of Ac-225 in millicurie quantities at its Beloit, Wisconsin, campus.

The company stated that its process yields Ac-225 with high radionuclidic purity, which is essential for consistent radiolabeling of drug products and therapeutic applications. The production method is designed to be scalable and relies on a generator-based supply model, enabling NorthStar to support a range of clinical programs, from early-phase trials to commercial distribution.

“Being first-to-market with routine, commercial-scale production of Ac-225 using electron-accelerator technology, demonstrates the strength of NorthStar’s innovative approach, and builds on our commitment of delivering high-quality radiopharmaceutical materials,” said Dr. Frank Scholz, president and CEO of NorthStar.

Ac-225 is an alpha-emitting radioisotope known for its potential in targeted radiopharmaceutical therapies. When bound to molecules such as antibodies or peptides, it can deliver high-energy radiation directly to cancer cells while minimizing damage to surrounding tissue. Its limited availability, however, has historically been a bottleneck for clinical development.

By establishing a steady supply of noncarrier-added Ac-225, NorthStar aims to help address ongoing global supply shortages. The company’s production capabilities are positioned to support radiopharmaceutical developers as they move through clinical development and toward regulatory approval.

NorthStar also produces copper-67 and offers contract development and manufacturing services to support radiopharmaceutical programs across the industry.
