Riverside Smithfield Hospital will begin seeing patients on Jan. 6, 2026, becoming the latest addition to Riverside Health’s network in southeastern Virginia.

The 50-bed facility is intended to improve access to medical services across Isle of Wight County and surrounding communities.

The hospital includes an emergency department, surgical suites, diagnostic imaging, and inpatient rooms. A medical office building located next to the hospital is already operational.

According to Riverside, the design of the facility incorporated input from staff, patients, and local residents. In addition to expanding clinical capacity, the hospital has added several hundred jobs to the region.

“This is more than the opening of a new hospital, it is an investment in the health and vitality of Isle of Wight and the surrounding communities,” said Dr. Mike Dacey, president and CEO of the Newport News-based health system.

Jessica Macalino, president of Riverside Smithfield Hospital, noted the project reflects years of planning and collaboration. “From emergency care to surgical services, this facility will make a meaningful difference for our neighbors and their families for generations to come,” she said.

In the weeks leading up to the opening, staff have participated in simulation exercises and clinical drills to test workflows and safety procedures. These efforts, the health system said, are intended to ensure a smooth launch and consistent patient care starting on day one.

Riverside has maintained a presence in Isle of Wight County through outpatient services and primary care practices. The new hospital is expected to reduce travel times for patients and consolidate more services under one roof.
