Florida State University and Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare have finalized a framework to establish a new academic health center in Tallahassee, marking a significant step in a long-standing effort to expand health care access and clinical education in North Florida.

The agreement, approved unanimously by the TMH board of directors, outlines a structure in which the hospital’s assets, including its 2-million-square-foot facility and surrounding 75-acre property, will be transferred to FSU. The university will lease the assets back to TMH under a 40-year operating agreement. TMH will remain the hospital’s licensed operator and maintain its independent, tax-exempt status.

FSU President Richard McCullough and TMH CEO Mark O’Bryant said in a joint statement that the collaboration “will elevate the quality of health care for our community, create dynamic educational pathways for students, and foster groundbreaking research.” They also emphasized that the hospital will continue to operate as a community-focused institution while expanding its clinical and academic footprint.

The partnership has been years in the making. TMH’s 2008 strategic plan first introduced the concept of a local academic health center. In 2021, both organizations approved a joint strategic alignment plan, and in 2022, FSU launched its Health Research Center with a $125 million appropriation from the Florida Legislature.

Construction on the new 140,000-square-foot research facility is underway on TMH’s campus and is expected to open in 2026. The building will house research labs, a family medicine residency clinic, and other facilities designed to bridge care delivery and clinical science.

Under the agreement, the hospital will adopt the FSU Health brand. While the current TMH leadership team and staff will remain in place, FSU will now hold seats on the hospital board, which retains authority over budgeting and strategic decisions.

Existing affiliations with Florida A&M University and Tallahassee State College will continue, with room for future collaboration.
