Prime Healthcare has completed its acquisition of eight Ascension Illinois hospitals, along with multiple senior living, post-acute care facilities, and physician practices, expanding its presence in the Greater Chicago area.

The deal, which marks the largest acquisition in Prime Healthcare's history, was approved by the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board, the Archdiocese of Chicago, and the Vatican.

The Ontario, California-based health system has committed $250 million to facility upgrades, technology investments, and system improvements. It has also extended employment offers to nearly all existing staff and pledged to maintain charity care programs.

"Prime Healthcare is honored to welcome these hospitals into our award-winning system, building upon our legacy of transforming healthcare and preserving access to life-saving services," said Sunny Bhatia, M.D., president and chief medical officer of Prime Healthcare.

The acquired hospitals include Holy Family Medical Center in Des Plaines, Mercy Medical Center in Aurora, Resurrection Medical Center in Chicago, Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston, Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet, Saint Joseph Hospital in Elgin, St. Mary’s Hospital in Kankakee, and Saint Mary of Nazareth Hospital in Chicago. St. Mary’s Hospital (Kankakee) and Saint Francis Hospital (Evanston) will join Prime Healthcare Foundation, the system’s nonprofit entity.

Prime Healthcare, which operates 51 hospitals across 14 states, has built a reputation for acquiring and revitalizing financially struggling hospitals. Since its founding in 2001, the system has provided more than $14 billion in community benefits and charity care.

"As a physician-founded and led health system, our mission is rooted in service, compassion, clinical excellence, and a deep commitment to patient-centered care," said Kavitha Bhatia, M.D., president and chair of Prime Healthcare Foundation. "We are honored to extend our mission to Chicagoland as we uplift communities and preserve access to care."
