Stantec has been selected to design a $212 million academic health sciences and clinical facility, a joint effort between Florida International University (FIU) and Baptist Health South Florida, aiming to address the region’s physician shortage while expanding healthcare education and clinical services.
The facility will be located on FIU’s Modesto A. Maidique campus in Miami and will serve as a hub for medical education, clinical research, and outpatient services.
Stantec will be tasked with architecture, medical planning, landscape design, and sustainability consulting. The firm has previously worked with FIU on engineering projects, but this marks its first collaboration with the university’s medical planning team.
Florida is projected to face a shortage of 18,000 physicians by 2035. FIU’s Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine, in partnership with Baptist Health, plans to establish at least 22 graduate medical education programs to train specialists in high-demand fields. The new facility will support these efforts by providing space for education and clinical care.
“There is a great deal of excitement around this collaboration because it elevates the work both FIU and Baptist Health are doing,” said FIU president Kenneth A. Jessell. “We are creating a rich ecosystem that will result in some of the best healthcare in the nation.”
Baptist Health's Baptist Hospital is on track to become a statutory teaching hospital, further expanding its medical education programs and research initiatives. The new facility will also provide direct outpatient healthcare services to the surrounding community.
“Florida’s growing and aging population makes the state susceptible to a physician shortage in primary care. We are proud to be a part of this important collaboration between FIU and Baptist Health as they bring together world-class clinical and academic expertise,” said Arturo Vasquez, AIA, design principal for Stantec. “Our design will support the brand promise of both entities as they share a path to expanded clinical care, improved wellness, and better health.”
