Regional Medical Center (RMC) in San Jose, California
The County of Santa Clara has announced an agreement with HCA Healthcare to purchase Regional Medical Center (RMC) in San Jose, California, for $150 million.
The deal, formalized through an Asset Purchase Agreement, is expected to close on April 1, 2025, pending regulatory approvals. Once finalized, RMC will become part of the Santa Clara Valley Healthcare (SCVH) system.
RMC, a 258-bed hospital serving East San Jose for 60 years, reduced trauma, cardiac (STEMI), and stroke services at the facility in 2024. Santa Clara County plans to restore Level II trauma care immediately after assuming control of the hospital, with STEMI and comprehensive stroke services to follow. Labor and delivery services, which were discontinued in 2020, are also expected to be reinstated at a later date.
County executive James R. Williams emphasized the importance of the acquisition for community healthcare. “Restoring RMC’s previous levels of care, including lifesaving trauma services, and incorporating it into the County’s excellent healthcare system will improve care for those living in East San Jose and our broader community,” he said. Williams also highlighted the preservation of jobs for hospital staff and the potential to avoid costly expansions at other county facilities.
The County intends to submit licensing applications to the state within 48 hours to meet the anticipated April 1 transition. Both parties have pledged to minimize disruptions for patients and staff during the process.
Once integrated, RMC will join the SCVH system, which includes Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, O’Connor Hospital, St. Louise Regional Hospital, and multiple clinics offering primary and specialty care services across the region.
