Police in Salt Lake City, Utah are investigating what they are describing as a “workplace shooting” at Varex Imaging Corporation after finding two of its employees dead on its premises.

At 2:33pm on Sunday, March 3, officers received word that a man with a gun was at the company headquarters on Pioneer Road. When they arrived, they found 61-year-old Hay Ly dead inside the building and Miller Ben, 56, who has been identified as the shooter, dead outside with a gun located nearby, said the police in an update.

The police say “there is no outstanding suspect or danger to the community” and that they are “working to determine a motive,” according to The Salt Lake Tribune. Based on preliminary information, they believe that Ben shot Ly inside and then turned the gun on himself in a company parking lot.

Varex Imaging, a manufacturer of medical imaging components and processing solutions, confirmed the two men were employees. Along with the police department, it has brought in social workers and counselors for support for employees who were working that Sunday and witnessed the shooting.

The shooting is the third homicide in Salt Lake City in 2024 and the first workplace homicide the police have responded to in years, reported KUTV CBS 2.

“This is something that is certainly out of the ordinary for any business in Salt Lake City,” SLCPD spokesperson Brent Weisberg said.

He added that the police are right now looking for “anyone who works at this particular location or who knows the individuals who may be involved in this situation to come forward to help our detectives trying to piece everything together.”

Officers were working with the District Attorney’s Office on Sunday to obtain a search warrant and conducted a protective sweep of the entire building to see if there were any other victims.

Varex Imaging did not respond to HCB News’ request for comment in time for publication.
