Siemens will install new technologies to help Prisma Health adhere to value-based care in its operations
Siemens Healthineers will update Prisma Health sites with new diagnostic medical imaging equipment and artificial intelligence technologies as part of a 10-year collaboration between the two.

The partnership aims to further value-based care in South Carolina by implementing solutions that will improve operational performance at Prisma Health and enhance delivery of its clinical services. It also will include the formation of an Intelligence Insights Center to ensure these objectives are achieved.

"This is especially important as we transition more and more toward value-based healthcare, where a health company such as Prisma Health will partner more closely with our community members to help them stay healthy, as opposed to caring for patients only when they are sick,” said Mark O'Halla, president and chief executive officer of Prisma Health, in a statement.

Among the equipment that Siemens will install across the 21-county market area covered by Prisma Health are a range of imaging modalities for MR, CT, nuclear medicine, diagnostic radiology, interventional radiology, cardiac cath and portable X-ray.

The deal is the company's largest in the United States, says Siemens. "Additionally, Prisma Health will receive digital solutions such as the teamplay digital health platform to help enable cross-departmental interoperability, syngo.via imaging software for 3D reading and advanced visualization, syngo Virtual Cockpit software for remote scanning assistance, AI-Rad Companion for multi-modality imaging decision support, and AI-Pathway Companion to help optimize diagnosis and therapeutic decisions along disease-specific pathways," David Pacitti, president and head of the Americas, Siemens Healthineers, told HCB News.

Aiming to improve quality and make healthcare more affordable and accessible, the Intelligence Insights Center will primarily focus on enabling Prisma Health to use AI algorithms to de-identify and derive insights from patient data that can help physicians make more informed decisions for faster and more precise diagnoses and treatment plans. The technology will also be used to predict and prevent diseases.

In addition, it will utilize computer-aided workflow tools to ensure best practices of care are performed and reduce timely operational tasks so providers can spend more time with patients. Prisma Health staff members will also become more digital-savvy in their skills, while the healthcare system will implement additional workforce development programs.

Siemens previously partnered with the Medical University of South Carolina in 2018 to improve quality and workflow and reduce cost of care there.
