Royal Philips and Medtronic Neurovascular have formed a new advocacy partnership aimed at raising awareness and accelerating access to lifesaving stroke treatments.

The partnership extends their ongoing collaboration with the World Stroke Organization (WSO). Both companies have joined the newly established WSO Advocacy Coalition, which includes healthcare professionals, patient groups, and policymakers. The coalition seeks to develop coordinated strategies to address the global stroke burden, which affects around 12 million people annually.

Stroke is a leading cause of disability and death worldwide, and costs are estimated at $900 billion annually. Philips and Medtronic are advocating for a global network of stroke care centers to provide comprehensive care, from early diagnosis to rehabilitation.

Their efforts focus on three key areas:

  • Raising public awareness of stroke symptoms and the importance of seeking immediate care.
  • Expanding access to treatment by increasing the number of stroke-ready hospitals and training healthcare professionals in advanced techniques.
  • Leveraging technology, such as advanced imaging and digital tools, to create integrated care systems that support early diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring.
The partnership will be spotlighted at the World Stroke Congress in Abu Dhabi, where the companies will host a stroke advocacy roundtable. This builds on their previous advocacy at global events like the United Nations General Assembly and the World Health Assembly.

“Our shared commitment to transforming stroke care is clear,” said Carla Goulart Peron, chief medical officer at Philips, emphasizing the importance of ensuring timely stroke care access globally.

Signe Haughton, chief of staff and senior director of medical and government affairs at Medtronic Neurovascular, added, “Together we are advocating for necessary investments in stroke care infrastructure to reduce the burden on patients and healthcare systems globally.”
