UAB Health System in Alabama is set to open a replacement facility for UAB Medical West.
The new facility comprises a 412,000-square-foot, nine-story hospital with 200 beds and a 127,000-square-foot, seven-story medical office building. It includes advanced surgical and endoscopy suites, 12 operating rooms, and state-of-the-art imaging technology. The hospital also features additional intensive care beds.
The previous location will close its emergency department and transfer all admitted patients to the new facility via ambulance.
Keith Pennington, CEO of UAB Medical West, emphasized the extensive planning with local emergency services to ensure a smooth transition. "We are thrilled to begin this new chapter for UAB Medical West and our community," he said.
"This move marks a novel chapter for our health care facility," Pennington noted. "Our replacement facility offers West Jefferson County residents and beyond access to unparalleled technology, health care, and services. We could not be prouder to continue the legacy of UAB Medical West and continue to grow and serve."
The hospital's design is nature-inspired, with each floor showcasing flora native to Alabama. The facility also includes a pond with walking trails, patient rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows, and local artwork curated by Gallery Services.
The 46-acre site was selected by Cushman & Wakefield/EGS Commercial Real Estate of Birmingham in 2017, and the project has a total investment of $400 million, funded by the USDA. Financial support was provided by Concourse, Raymond James, Thornton Farrish, PNC Bank, GNC, and Maynard, Cooper & Gale.
Johnson Development served as the project manager, with Brasfield & Gorrie as the general contractor. The architectural design was led by HKS and KPS, with site engineering by CCI, Bhate Geosciences, and Building & Earth.
