With FDA clearance, Siemens Healthineers has introduced its first mobile imaging C-arm technology with self-driving capabilities, CIARTIC Move, to the U.S. market.

The solution has an automated workflow that reduces time, effort, and workforce capacity for manually moving and positioning the C-arm, with up to 12 procedure-specific positions that can be stored with imaging parameters. A fully motorized chassis and touch-sense handles allow the system to move effortlessly, and active sensing technology scans for obstacles to prevent collisions, stopping the machine if one is detected.

Surgeons and operating rooms in hospitals and outpatient facilities can use CIARTIC Move to perform 2D fluoroscopic and 3D cone-beam CT for orthopedic, trauma, spine, thoracic, vascular, cardiovascular, and general surgery, as well as urology and interventional pulmonology.

According to April Grandominico, vice president for surgical therapies in the Advanced Therapies business at Siemens Healthineers North America, CIARTIC Move provides “much-needed relief for overtaxed operating room teams by automating and accelerating intraoperative imaging workflows to a previously unseen degree.”

The push of a button recalls stored positions and imaging parameters, eliminating the need for long discussions between surgeons and OR teams. Staff can easily reproduce images at desired angles and return the C-arm to park and table positions. Siemens Healthineers says it could be a potential aid for labor shortages or overwhelmed ORs.

In a preclinical trial, the solution reduced intraoperative time for spinal surgery by almost 50% and by 55% for pelvic, compared to traditional mobile C-arms. A single user can control the system remotely via a wireless control, even from within the sterile field.
