In preparation for its upcoming bicentennial, Jefferson Health, in Philadelphia, has completed construction on its $772 million Honickman Center, a multispecialty outpatient care center that is the core part of a more than $1 billion urban development project in the city’s East Market block.

The approximately 462,000-square-foot facility includes more than 300 patient rooms and 58 infusion chairs, ten operating rooms, six endoscopy rooms, an onsite lab, a pharmacy, radiology services, and more. Specialties practiced there will include gastroenterology and hepatology, general surgery, hematology, infectious diseases, nephrology, otolaryngology head and neck surgery, perioperative optimization, rheumatology, and urology.

It also houses several centers, including the Honickman Breast Imaging Center; the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center; the Vickie & Jack Farber Institute for Neuroscience; the Nicoletti Kidney Transplant Center; the Jefferson Heart and Vascular Institute; the Jefferson Transplant Institute; the Jane and Leonard Korman Respiratory Institute – Jefferson Health, and National Jewish Health.

Designed to cut down on movement and transfers to other facilities, the Honickman Center allows patients to schedule multiple appointments on the same day, in one facility, with doctors at other sites able to virtually interact with patients and their clinicians during appointments via digital whiteboards, a proprietary technology developed by Jefferson. Patients can also use the technology to communicate with their loved ones.

“The Honickman Center represents the future of healthcare by blending physical and virtual care while enhancing the human interaction between a patient and their care provider,” said Dr. Baligh Yehia, president of Jefferson Health, in a statement.

Orchestrated by the National Real Estate Development LLC, the development project has modernized the look of the East Market Street area, adding to it podium retail, rental apartments, state-of-the-art digital and static signage, Class A warehouse office space, ground-floor retail, and more. The fully built Honickman Center marks the completion of its final phase.

In addition to its clinical care options, the building also includes various art installations and sixty neurodiverse-friendly seats to make Autistic patients feel comfortable, an idea made possible by a group of industrial-design students who teamed up with the Jefferson Center for Autism and Neurodiversity to design the seats.

Construction on the center lasted four years and supported 4,120 jobs. It also provided $25 million in tax and fee revenue to the City of Philadelphia.

It is scheduled to begin admitting patients on April 15.
