Samsung Electronics is integrating two of Lunit’s AI-powered technologies with its premium X-ray systems to increase the accuracy and speed at which providers can produce chest scans.

As part of a three-year supply agreement, Samsung’s solutions will be equipped with Lunit INSIGHT CXR, which detects ten of the most common lung abnormalities, and Lunit INSIGHT CXR Triage, which prioritizes prespecified critical findings on frontal chest X-rays.

Both will initially be sold to providers in the U.S., Canada, and Europe, and the companies expect the integration to make these X-ray solutions more valuable in intensive care units and emergency room settings.

"The synergy between Lunit and Samsung Electronics will enable faster, more accurate chest screenings, leading to timely interventions and improved patient outcomes. We're excited about the potential this partnership holds for advancing chest X-ray practices, particularly in ICUs and ERs," said Brandon Suh, CEO of Lunit, in a statement.

Among the conditions that Lunit INSIGHT CXR can detect are lung cancer, pneumonia, pneumothorax, and tuberculosis. A prospective clinical study published in February 2023 found that it more than doubled the rate at which lung nodules were detected and identified the ten abnormalities that it’s designed to diagnose with 97%–99% accuracy. It also is CE marked.

Lunit INSIGHT CXR Triage is FDA-cleared and can detect pleural effusion or pneumothorax among other issues. The triage-based X-ray system’s software flags these images in the PACS or workstation, tipping off the radiologist as to which scans should be read first.

The companies plan to eventually deploy their combined solution in the Middle East, South America, and Southeast Asia.
