GE HealthCare has acquired Caption Health, the developer of ultrasound AI software Caption AI.
GE HealthCare will acquire ultrasound AI software developer Caption Health.

Designed for early disease detection, Caption Health’s flagship system, Caption AI allows inexperienced healthcare professionals perform echocardiograms in doctors’ offices, the home, and other sites of care, and diagnose at-risk patients early.

The technology is equipped with Caption Guidance, for real-time guidance on how to position and manipulate the transducer on a patient’s body; and Caption Interpretation, which automatically calculates ejection fraction.

“Caption Health will first be integrated in the point-of-care and Handheld business portfolio to advance ultrasound adoption, with expanded future use cases as well,” said Karley Yoder, chief digital officer for ultrasound at GE HealthCare, in a statement.

The leading cause of death, early symptoms of heart failure are commonly confused with aging. According to a 2021 study, Disparity in the Setting of Incident Heart Failure Diagnosis, out of 38% of new heart failure patients diagnosed in acute care facilities, 46% showed potential symptoms six months prior, when intervention would have been more effective.

In addition to Caption AI, Caption Health has a development pipeline of AI software, including for pulmonary applications in ultrasound. It will continue to provide management and administrative services to affiliated medical service providers, collectively referred to as Capital Care.

“This will ultimately help us reduce costs and enhance care,” said Caption Health CEO Steve Cashman.
The acquisition is subject to customary closing conditions, and will be funded with cash on hand.
