Intelerad Medical Systems has acquired Insignia Medical Systems in a deal expected to bring next-generation imaging to hospital trusts across the U.K.

Serving British providers for almost two decades, Insignia helps manage over three billion images with its PACS and VNA technology. Its purchase by Intelerad is expected to help address higher demand for diagnostic imaging as hospitals grapple with a growing, aging population and more diverse conditions, such as increased obesity and diabetes, on thinner budgets.

Specifically, the deal is expected to provide clinicians with access to cross-enterprise imaging solutions that can better manage the volume of imaging they face and at the same time, allow them to work together to provide higher quality care at lower costs.

At the same time, it will deepen Insignia’s resources, enhance its technology and expand its footprint, said Richard Dormer, managing director of Insignia, in a statement. “Joining forces with Intelerad equips us with even greater opportunities to offer best-in-class resources and technologies to our healthcare customers.”

Intelerad’s IntelePACS is designed to integrate seamlessly with third-party HIS, RIS and EMR solutions. It preserves image and data quality with communications and compression technology. Among its features are its easy-to-use InteleViewer for digital imaging and communications and InteleConnect Clinical Hub, which allows for the quick delivery of results and reports to referring physicians. It was recently included in a deal with LifeBridge Health, which will utilize Intelerad’s nuage Cloud Imaging Platform at its facilities in Maryland.

Among Insignia’s products are its InSight PACS, which is the only PACS solution exclusively tailored for the NHS and local private hospitals and is the largest system of its kind in the U.K., according to the company. It includes advanced sharing and regional MDT support, as well as support for 4D, dual echo and diffusion weighted imaging. Insignia is the second largest VNA supplier in the country and provides management and interoperability services with its InStore VNA. It says its solution was recently used in the largest and most prolific migration project.

“With solutions such as InSight PACS, which is focused on the NHS and local private health care providers, Insignia is able to deliver vast benefits to hundreds of hospitals throughout the region,” said Mike Lipps, CEO of Intelerad. “We are excited to work alongside Insignia as we collectively aim to further provide U.K. hospitals with the solutions they need to improve key clinical outcomes, while simultaneously offering unparalleled support and service.”

Earlier this year, Intelerad acquired LUMEDX, a developer of healthcare analytics and cardiovascular information systems, followed by Heart Imaging Technologies, a clinical workflow automation company.

Financial details for the Intelerad-Insignia deal were not disclosed.
