Canon Medical Systems is making changes to and renaming its HIT division
Canon Medical Systems Corporation will be introducing changes over the coming months to its healthcare information technology (HIT) division, including a rebrand.
The division will now be known as Canon Medical Informatics and will consist of the company’s full range of enterprise, AI and collaborative imaging Solutions. It also will incorporate its Vital Images advanced visualization subsidiary into the Canon Medical brand for a more unified business approach.
“Enhancing our HIT solution and service provision is the natural next step in a world that demands accurate and immediate results across the entire hospital enterprise,” said Toshio Takiguchi, CEO and president of Canon Medical, in a statement.

The aim behind the changes is to make the HIT division a key growth pillar within the company that will allow customers access to a full range of solutions they need to improve patient outcomes and decrease turnaround time. The company expects this to help healthcare providers better transition into value-based care systems.
“I am confident that customers around the globe can look forward to enhanced service delivery, uncompromised quality, and an innovative approach to healthcare — which is why I am excited to strengthen the HIT division under the entity name Canon Medical Informatics Inc., leveraging the global reach of Canon Medical,” said Jim Litterer, president and CEO of Vital Images.
Vital Images was acquired in 2011 by Toshiba Medical Systems, which in turn was purchased by Canon for $6 billion in 2016.
Since then, Canon has made a number of other strategic moves, including
moving the X-ray business of its subsidiary Virtual Imaging to Canon Medical Systems USA in 2019 to create a more “one-stop” shop for purchasing equipment and service and applications support. It also introduced in May of this year its
Medical Marketplace, an online store for OEM medical imaging parts.
The formal name change and reform are expected to take effect on October 1.
