Kolo Medical is set to unveil its new ultrasound transducer at the 2017 IEEE International Ultrasonics Symposium (IUS), which will take place from Sept. 6-9 in Washington, D.C.

The company aims to make the SiliconWave L38-22 Linear Array transducer a tool among physicians for enhancing ultrasound technology in fields such as dermatology and rheumatology.

“Kolo Medical has designed this probe to be a "plug and play" probe option for virtually any ultrasound platform,” John Easton, a spokesperson for Kolo Medical, told HCB News. “Each ultrasound system will have its unique integration and image optimization procedure to obtain their desired image aesthetic.”

The transducer uses cMUT technology to provide detail and contrast resolution for enhancing clinical capabilities, and contains a high frequency center of 30 MHz to enable high-resolution superficial imaging, allowing dermatologists to examine different dermal layers and reconstructive and cosmetic applications.

It can be used to image superficial tendons, nerves and joints of the wrist, hands and feet for static and dynamic assessments of tissue in MSK diagnoses, as well as for thyroid, breast and testicular imaging, rheumatology, and vascular access for pediatric, infant and neonatal patients. The device could also serve as a research imaging tool when examining mouse and rat test subjects.

Easton says that, based on these abilities, the Silicon Wave L38-22 Linear Array transducer could one day become a regular diagnostic tool.

“It is possible, perhaps probable, this technology will set a diagnostic standard that becomes the standard for high-resolution imaging across many applications,” he said.

Kolo Medical previously introduced three other SiliconWave transducers last year at the 2016 IEEE International Ultrasonics Symposium.
