GE HealthCare's Voluson Expert ultrasound system uses Intelligent Ultrasound's ScanNav Assist AI
GE HealthCare has announced an agreement to acquire the clinical AI software business of Intelligent Ultrasound Group PLC for approximately $51 million in a move aimed at integrating real-time image recognition technology into its ultrasound portfolio, enhancing the accuracy and efficiency of OBGYN scans.
Intelligent Ultrasound, based in Cardiff in the U.K. and Atlanta in the U.S., is one of the world's leading "classroom to clinic" ultrasound companies, specializing in real-time high-fidelity virtual reality simulation for the ultrasound training market and AI-based clinical image analysis software tools.
The company is known for its ScanNav Assist AI technology, which powers the SonoLystlive and SonoLyst X/IR features on GE HealthCare’s Voluson Expert and Voluson Signature ultrasound devices. These technologies reduce manual processes and enhance reproducibility between users, addressing the high demand for radiology technologists and the widespread occurrence of work-related musculoskeletal disorders among sonographers.
Phil Rackliffe, president and CEO of Ultrasound and Image-Guided Therapies at GE HealthCare, highlighted the strategic value of the acquisition. "Bringing in Intelligent Ultrasound’s innovative technology allows us to improve workflows, reduce repetitive tasks, and simplify exams," said Rackliffe. "This addition will enhance our AI-enabled devices and accelerate the development of next-generation AI tools."
The acquisition aligns with GE HealthCare’s precision care strategy, which focuses on addressing inefficiencies in clinical workflows and improving patient care quality. The company’s portfolio of AI-enabled devices currently
leads the FDA's list of AI-enabled device authorizations among medical technology companies.
Last month, GE HealthCare announced it would be
combining its ultrasound business with its image-guided therapies unit in the third quarter of 2024. The new combined segment is expected to generate over $5 billion in annual revenue.
"Joining GE HealthCare will accelerate the adoption of our technology, making ultrasound even easier for customers to use," said Nick Sleep, chief operating officer of Intelligent Ultrasound. He, along with other research and development experts from Intelligent Ultrasound, will join GE HealthCare as part of the deal.
Following the sale, Intelligent Ultrasound will refocus on its high-fidelity ultrasound simulation technology, aimed at enhancing ultrasound education.
The transaction is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2024, subject to customary closing conditions, and will be funded by GE HealthCare’s cash reserves.
