“The company I worked for didn’t believe contrast agents were necessary for MR,” says Spinazzi, who believes most other companies felt the same way at that time. “One guy, Hanns-Joachim Weinmann, was a big believer and he proved to his company, Bayer, that there was significant advantage to using contrast in MR imaging.” Approval of contrast agents arrived in Europe and then in the U.S., where the FDA green-lighted their use on the basis of a typical risk-to-benefit profile.
