The American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) announced this week that they will welcome more than 500 members from the American College of Medical Coding Specialists (ACMCS) into their organization.

ACMCS members voted to join with AHIMA, which includes more than 64,000 health information management professionals worldwide, to advance practices and standards within the medical coding and health information management profession.

"We are thrilled to welcome ACMCS members to AHIMA. They bring a unique and valued perspective to our association, and we look forward to leveraging our expertise and resources to help them advance their careers," AHIMA CEO Lynne Thomas Gordon told DOTmed News in an e-mailed statement.

AHIMA also said they will lead a group that will include ACMCS members and other industry association representatives to evaluate collaboration strategies addressing the needs of the physician market. In addition, ACMCS members will have the opportunity to engage in leadership roles concerning medical coding matters, as well as potentially serve on key AHIMA committees because of the collaboration, especially with ICD-10 expected in October, 2014.

The two organizations have partners in the past on educational opportunities, conferences and seminars.
