Ultrasound company SuperSonic Imagine is currently displaying its newest innovation -- the UltraFast Doppler -- at the Radiological Society of North America 2011 conference in Chicago.
"[UltraFast] is the first breakthrough in ultrasound in 20 years," said Michele Debain, SuperSonic's global marketing director. "It's not just a bell and whistle, it's a real breakthrough."
Utilizing UltraFast with Aixplorer, the company's multi-purpose FDA-approved ultrasound system, unites Color Flow Imaging with Pulsed Wave Doppler. Traditionally, these modes are used separately by physicians, with examinations taking up to 40 minutes to complete.

"By combining Color Flow Imaging and Pulsed Wave Doppler with UltraFast, we can tell the peak velocity point in seconds - immediately," Debain said. "It is actually ten times faster than conventional Color Doppler; this is a major development in medical imaging."
UltraFast also acquires fully quantifiable Doppler data throughout the Color box, enabling the generation of post-processed Pulsed Wave Doppler spectra from multiple locations in the same image.
"For the first time ever, in the same cardiac cycle, we can compare three gates," said Debain. "Today's conventional Pulsed Wave Doppler can only look at one gate at a time. It's a phenomenon never before seen."
Enabling higher through-play, reducing costs and scanning more patients in less time are UltraFast's main aims.
"I call [UltraFast] a work flow revolution," said Debain. "It's a fabulous time saver, not only for the general radiologist, but also for the vascular labs."
