Engineering and biotech giant PerkinElmer Inc. said Monday it bought British X-ray technology company Dexela Limited.

The six-year-old Dexela, based in London, focuses on breast imaging, and sells flat panel detectors and 3-D image processing software to OEMs to package with their equipment. The company makes the high-speed CMOS X-ray detector, a mammography workstation and tomosynthesis reconstruction software.

The company also designs equipment for dental CT, cardiology and industrial testing.

"Dexela has been a pioneer in the development of CMOS X-ray detection solutions and has achieved award-winning recognition in the imaging market for its design strengths and ease of manufacturability -- which are major advantages for OEM customers," Brian Giambattista, president of medical imaging with PerkinElmer, said in a statement.

Waltham, Mass.-based PerkinElmer said it has sold more than 15,000 flat-panel detectors for use in radiation oncology, human and veterinary radiography, airplane and car manufacturing and the petroleum industry. The company said it had $1.7 billion in sales last year.
