Based on a six-year Surviving Sepsis Campaign (SSC), GE Healthcare has designed a clinical best practice program "Trends in Sepsis Management: Identify and Treat Sepsis Using the Latest Evidence."

GE designed the course to help health care professionals learn to control sepsis, reduce its severity, patient length of stay and care costs. Critical care expert, Thomas Ahrens, RN, DNS, CCNS, FAAN collaborated with GE to develop the course.

The mortality rate associated with sepsis reaches nearly 40 percent and is the leading cause of death in most ICUs. The SSC estimated deaths annually from sepsis at 215,000, nearly 85,000 more than the American Cancer Society's combined statistics on deaths in America in 2008 from colon, breast, prostate and ovary cancer.

The SSC, an initiative to reduce global mortality instances occurring from sepsis, concluded year-end 2008. The campaign was a collaboration of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine, the International Sepsis Forum, and the Society of Critical Care Medicine.

The web-based course will use interactive learning tools in practice cases.

Sara McMannus, GE Healthcare Education Services, Clinical Education Program Manager said, "Staff can learn at their convenience and complete the course within two to four weeks. The program is designed to efficiently and cost-effectively share the latest evidence-based practice among an entire hospital staff." McMannus added that CEUs are awarded on course completion.
