Alberta's government is launching a $557.7 million ($800 million CAD) initiative aimed at modernizing cancer care across the Canadian province, as part of a long-term partnership with Siemens Healthineers and the Alberta Cancer Foundation.

The eight-year investment seeks to reduce wait times, improve early detection, and expand access to new technologies and training programs.

As part of the agreement, Siemens Healthineers will contribute an additional $122 million ($175 million CAD) to support the creation of two centers of excellence — one focused on oncology education and the other on AI in cancer care. A separate research and innovation fund will also be established under the Alberta Cancer Foundation to support recruitment and retention of top-tier talent.

Siemens Healthineers is expected to begin replacing outdated oncology imaging and treatment systems immediately, while also introducing digital and consulting solutions to support care coordination and capacity.

“This investment will position our province as a leader in cancer care by leveraging artificial intelligence, attracting healthcare professionals, and supporting researchers in developing innovative cancer care solutions,” said Alberta Premier Danielle Smith.

The partnership follows a Value Partnership model, which Siemens Healthineers uses to provide long-term support for health systems through managed services, technology upgrades, and clinical optimization.

“This partnership will reduce wait times and patient expenses while increasing capacity across the health care system,” said Adriana LaGrange, Alberta’s minister of health.

The initiative comes amid rising cancer rates and growing strain on Alberta’s healthcare system due to an aging and expanding population. The Alberta Cancer Foundation, which will manage the research and innovation fund, is tasked with advancing clinical studies and promoting access to personalized treatments.

“We're proud to be a partner in moving the needle here at home and a catalyst for bringing more effective, personalized treatments to patients sooner,” said Wendy Beauchesne, CEO of the Alberta Cancer Foundation.
