GE HealthCare to establish MR center for R&D in Cincinnati, Ohio

GE HealthCare is planning to establish a new MR research and development center on the University of Cincinnati medical campus in an effort to advance MR technology tailored to the unique clinical needs of both adult and pediatric patients.

The center will be equipped with GE HealthCare’s SIGNA Premier 3.0T wide-bore MR scanner, featuring advanced technologies such as AIR Coils and AI-driven applications like AIR Recon DL. These innovations are designed to enhance image quality and reduce scan times, benefiting various medical fields including neurology, oncology, and cardiovascular health.

In addition to the University of Cincinnati and UC Health, the center is being developed in partnership with Cincinnati Children’s, JobsOhio, and REDI Cincinnati.

“We are excited to launch a collaboration with our partners at UC, UC Health, and Cincinnati Children’s to bring technical knowledge from our GE HealthCare MR Applied Science Lab team together in the field with clinical expertise from these renowned health institutions,” said Anja Brau, Ph.D., general manager of MR Clinical Solutions and Research Collaborations at GE HealthCare. “We find this model of ‘real world’ collaboration effective to leverage collective strengths of industry and academia and accelerate the translation from prototype to clinical reality.”

The initiative is supported by an R&D grant from JobsOhio, which will also aid in expanding engineering and manufacturing jobs at GE HealthCare’s Aurora, Ohio, facility. This collaboration is expected to create new clinical and scientific roles at the Cincinnati R&D center.

The initiative also aims to build on GE HealthCare’s presence in Ohio, particularly its MR RF coil R&D and manufacturing facility in Aurora. The collaboration will leverage the infrastructure of the University of Cincinnati, UC Health, and Cincinnati Children’s, along with their extensive research capabilities and expertise.

This project is part of a broader effort to foster innovation within the Cincinnati Innovation District and enhance the region’s healthcare and life sciences sectors.
