AiM Medical Robotics has announced a partnership with Brigham and Women's Hospital to conduct a first-of-its-kind human clinical study for MR-guided deep brain stimulation (DBS) lead placement in patients with Parkinson's disease.
The study will take place in the Advanced Multimodality Image-Guided Operating (AMIGO) Suite at BWH, a cutting-edge clinical research facility.
On May 10, 2024, AiM and BWH's clinical team successfully conducted a cadaver trial at the PracticePoint Medtech Accelerator facility at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, where AiM is headquartered. The trial demonstrated the efficacy of AiM's MR-compatible robot in performing bilateral DBS lead placement with real-time MR guidance.

AiM's robotic system integrates Synaptive Medical's Modus Nav neuro-navigation software to enhance surgical precision and efficiency by providing real-time MR updates, ensuring accurate targeting and localization during procedures.
AiM's CEO, Gregory Fischer, emphasized the importance of the study, building on previous successful research efforts, including a 30-patient trial for MR-guided, robot-assisted prostate cancer biopsy. The current project continues AiM's mission to introduce innovative, MR-compatible surgical robots that facilitate precise intraoperative planning and guidance.
The company's technology addresses the issue of brain shift, which often leads to inconsistent outcomes in neurosurgery. By enabling real-time imaging and adjustments, AiM's robotic system aims to reduce the need for revision surgeries, which currently occur in 34% of DBS lead placements due to missed targets.
