Cleveland Clinic and Canon are forming a comprehensive imaging research center.
Cleveland Clinic and Canon revealed plans at RSNA to establish a comprehensive imaging research center where they will develop imaging and health IT applications to improve diagnosis and care processes and long-term outcomes for patients.

Clinicians, researchers, and engineers from both organizations will work together to design these solutions in joint research projects focused on pre-clinical imaging, human imaging, and image analysis in cardiology, neurology, musculoskeletal science, and other areas.

Cleveland Clinic and Canon will also form local and global research partnerships with other companies and providers to assist in these endeavors.

“This unique collaboration leverages Cleveland Clinic’s expertise in biomedical research and clinical care with Canon’s global leadership in imaging innovation and precision manufacturing,” said Cleveland Clinic CEO and president, and Morton L. Mandel CEO Chair Dr. Tom Mihaljevic, in a statement.

Individuals involved will share a workspace in an existing building in Cleveland’s Fairfax neighborhood, adjacent to Cleveland Clinic’s main campus. The center will be part of the Cleveland Innovation District, a more than $500 million public-private partnership that enables the state of Ohio and JobsOhio to work with healthcare and educational institutions in Cleveland to conduct research, create jobs, and educate workers.

Earlier this year, in Cleveland, Canon launched its U.S. subsidiary, Canon Healthcare USA, which announced this week at the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) Annual Conference the release of its Precise IQ Engine (PIQE), a new deep-learning technology for removing noise and sharpening MR images.

The company, which has nearly $4 billion in annual revenue, also unveiled improvements for its CT scanners, including End-to-End CT Workflow Automation, which streamlines imaging operations from referral through reporting.

Cleveland Clinic is a 6,699-bed health system with its 173-acre main campus near downtown Cleveland. It has 23 hospitals and over 275 outpatient facilities in Ohio; Florida; Nevada; Toronto, Canada; Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE); and London, England.
