Siemens Healthineers has unveiled Somatom Pro.Pulse, a dual-source CT scanner designed to be less costly to maintain and affordable for small and rural facilities.

Dual-source CT scanners come with two X-ray sources that sit at 90 degrees to one another to create more precise cross-sectional images. Using two sources instead of one also doubles the speed at which imaging is performed. These solutions can be used to diagnose tumors, guide surgeons during procedures, analyze blood vessels, and more.

In Somatom Pro.Pulse, Siemens Healthineers has installed an improved cooling system and designed it to consume 20% less power, lowering life cycle costs, which are often a reason why healthcare providers cannot afford this technology, and making the solution more sustainable.

“The clinical role of CT is expanding into a key player in early detection and therapy planning. Therefore, we need a high-performance system allowing exams for an even broader patient group. With Somatom Pro.Pulse we are able to perform high-quality cardiac imaging, and in other areas of radiology,” said Dr. Quoc-Duy Vo, head of the radiology department in Morges Hospital, in Switzerland, in a statement.

Here is an overview of its capabilities:

Limits artifacts – Because they have two radiation tubes and detectors each, dual-source CT scanners have high temporal resolution, which, combined with high imaging speeds, reduces artifacts from breathing or heart motion. This is very important for successful cardiac scanning.

Low radiation dose – Tin filters keep radiation exposure low, while maintaining optimal imaging quality, which is helpful for procedures such as ultralow-dose thorax screenings.

Equipped with myExam Companion – Siemens Healthineers’ intelligent workflow software simplifies and personalizes scans for patients by incorporating patient data such as gender, height, age, and relevant information for CT scans such as heart and breath-hold rates. It uses this information to optimize scan parameters and create a tailored patient-specific scan protocol.

Automates patient positioning – The FAST (fully assisting scanner technologies) 3D camera performs precise and consistent patient positioning, which, along with myExam Companion, decreases the time clinicians spend performing routine tasks.

“CT exams performed on this system follow an intelligent and intuitive workflow appealing to various levels of experience. This enables standardization and reproducibility for clinicians and thus, saves personnel capacities,” said Philipp Fischer, head of computed tomography at Siemens Healthineers, in a statement.
