RaySearch to integrate with B dot Medical's ultra-compact proton therapy system

RaySearch Laboratories is integrating its radiotherapy-based software applications with B dot Medical’s ultra-compact proton therapy system, which is small enough to be installed inside existing hospital rooms.

RaySearch will add its RayStation treatment planning system, which has adaptive therapy, multicriteria optimization, and external beam optimization capabilities, including for proton therapy; and RayCare, its oncology information system, which is synced with RayStation and is used to schedule treatments and manage resources for procedures.

"For software installation, tuning is required for any treatment system. The two companies will join forces to ensure secure and effective treatment on our ultra-compact proton therapy system," Makiko Taketani, spokesperson for B dot Medical, told HCB News.

A Japanese startup, B dot Medical was established in 2017, and announced in January 2023 that it would be installing its compact proton system in Japan's Edogawa Hospital, which will be the first proton therapy facility in Tokyo.

Because the solution can be installed within a room, constructing an entire building to house it is not necessary, reducing its price to around the same amount as conventional radiotherapy systems. Its compactness is made possible by its scanning magnet, which bends proton beams at arbitrary angles, reducing the distance between the irradiation system and the irradiation position to about one-third that of a conventional magnet.

The solution also has a nonrotating gantry, and can perform respiratory-gated irradiation, which allows patients to breathe normally and ensures radiation is only applied when the tumor is within the treatment field. In June 2022, the company announced that its system could also perform high-speed scanning.

RaySearch recently made its RayCare system interoperable with Varian’s TrueBeam linac systems, allowing for treatments to be scheduled faster and the tracking of care progress.
