Compressed SPEEDER makes exams twice as fast
The FDA has given the nod for the integration of Compressed SPEEDER technology for 3D sequences on Canon Medical Systems’ Vantage Orian 1.5T MR scanner.

The technology is expected to help clinicians scan patients at least twice as fast. "By accelerating 3D scans, the new Compressed SPEEDER technology can bring the benefits of 3D scanning to clinical reality. One very specific benefit would be the ability to scan a single 3D volume and reformat in any plane, as opposed to having to acquire 3 different scans in all three x, y, and z planes as is done with traditional 2D imaging," Jonathan Furuyama, managing director of the MR BU Unit for Canon Medical Systems USA, told HCB News.

Compressed SPEEDER 3D is designed to help generate 3D sequence scans in less time for exams such as surgical planning and orthopedic applications. It does this by reconstructing full resolution images from under-sampled data through iterative reconstruction, which allows for greater acceleration and does not face many of the challenges of traditional parallel imaging. The addition of FAST3D, another technique, further speeds up exams when combined with Compressed SPEEDER 3D.

Compressed SPEEDER is available in a new version of M-Power software for the Vantage Orian 1.5T MR system. The technology itself was FDA cleared back in March. Reducing scan times may also enhance patient comfort, which reduces patient movement and enables higher-quality images during long scans.

"Time savings will depend heavily on a user's mix of 2D versus 3D protocols and resolution requirements," said Furuyama.

Another feature of Vantage Orian 1.5 is Fat Fraction Quantification, an application integrated directly onto its console to help image and quantify fatty liver disease.

Compressed SPEEDER is 510(k) pending for the Vantage Galan 3T MR system.
