U.S. physicians will soon be able to perform routine fluoroscopy and digital X-ray exams simultaneously in one solution following the FDA’s clearance of Philips’ Digital Radiography-Fluoroscopy (DRF) system.

ProxiDiagnost N90, equipped with premium flat detector technology and Philips’ UNIQUE image processing software, eliminates the need for several frames to produce usable images for confident diagnoses, and supports high room utilization and increased patient throughput, enhancing both workflow support and patient accessibility.

“By providing fully capable digital radiography and fluoroscopy components in one room, providers can maximize their room utilization, improve patient throughput and enhance the quality of scans, translating to improved value on both cost and patient care,” David Nelson, director of field marketing, Digital X-ray, Philips told HCB News. “Using Philips’ dynamic UNIQUE image processing, which provides excellent fluoroscopic image quality created in real time, our customers are also reporting shorter exam times and avoiding additional radiographic imaging due to the quality of fluoroscopy images they receive.”

By enabling technologists to conduct procedures next to a patient, the solution not only improves workflow but also patient satisfaction.

This quality is further enhanced by its small footprint design and open overhead area and table, which enable technologists or caregivers to be closer to patients during procedures to keep them calm, a trait especially important for elderly and pediatric patients.

In addition, the system utilizes Philips' grid-controlled fluoroscopy to reduce radiation dosage based on patient type and clinical application by up to 68 percent, compared to pulse-controlled fluoroscopy.

Nelson notes that such capabilities prove the need for X-ray, a modality that some experts say could eventually be replaced by CT or MR as imaging technology continues to evolve.

“Across health care today, the volume of x-ray exams continues to exceed the volumes of CT and MR exams,” he said. “Providers today find value in the simple design of x-ray equipment, which is faster and less expensive than other modalities. While CT and MR technology remain critical solutions for health care providers and their patients, digital x-ray technology brings a unique set of benefits to imaging, serving as a cost-effective imaging solution for price-conscious hospitals.”

ProxiDiagnost N90 is available for sale in the U.S.
