Aspect Imaging announced on Thursday that its Embrace Neonatal MRI System scored CE mark for use in the neonatal ICU.

The system was cleared by the FDA in July and is already in use at Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Israel.

"About 15 percent of newborns are born prematurely," Uri Rapoport, CEO and founder of Aspect Imaging, told HCB News. "Embrace [is] able to perform [an] MRI scan for premature babies, while they are at the neonatal intensive care unit and without the need of transporting them away from the NICU."

Conventional MR systems are typically used to image babies, but they have to be taken outside of the NICU to do so. The Embrace Neonatal MR can be placed directly in the NICU since it doesn’t require an RF-shielded room.

Embrace also comes with an integrated, temperature-controlled bed that’s similar to an incubator. That helps to reduce the baby's movement.

In late October, Aspect Imaging announced that Natus Medical Incorporated is the exclusive distributor of Embrace in the U.S. As part of the agreement, Natus Medical will make the system available to its customer base and also gain equity participation in Aspect Imaging.
