Also at ASTRO, Elekta displayed its Unity system, which also combines MR and linear accelerator technology. It has not been submitted for FDA clearance.
Ioannis Panagiotelis, chief marketing and sales officer at Elekta, said that the Unity incorporates a Philips high-field MRI, compared to the .3T MRI in the MRIdian, a five-times smaller signal compared to the Unity.

“In theory, you could acquire five times longer and still get the same image quality,” Panagiotelis told HCB News. “However, if you wait five times longer in order to acquire, the patient is going to move during this period. The whole advantage from using the MR linac is kind of getting lost, simply because you have to acquire longer.”
Mike Saracen, vice president of marketing for ViewRay, said the company partnered with Siemens Healthineers to co-develop a magnet “from the ground up.”
The company chose a low field strength to reduce geometric distortion, which is not an issue with diagnostic MR.
“We’re not trying to diagnose patients,” Saracen said. “We’re treating patients.”
