Nanotherapeutics involves treating a disease on the molecular level and it’s already being used to treat cancer and infections. Platelet-sized nanobots coated with a tissue plasminogen activator are currently under investigation for the treatment of stroke.

Compared to the traditional approach, the nanobots can deliver tPA faster, and it results in fewer side effects because tPA is delivered to the non-clotting vessels in the body. Mouse experiments that tested the nanobots for four years have yielded promising results and a commercial product may on be two to three years away.
