In May, Hackensack University Health Network (UHN) and Meridian Health signed a definitive agreement to merge the health systems and create Hackensack Meridian Health, and in the next few months they are expecting state and regulatory clearance. In the meantime, the health systems are working on transitioning the two systems into one.

“By harnessing the collective knowledge and resources of both Hackensack University Health Network and Meridian Health, we are creating a world-class health system to offer our New Jersey residents some of the finest health care in the nation — streamlining care, offering patients more options and discovering research for tomorrow,” Robert C. Garrett, president and CEO of Hackensack University Health Network, said in a statement.

Garrett and John Lloyd, president and CEO of Meridian Health, will be co-presidents for two and a half years and then Garrett will become president and CEO of Hackensack Meridian Health. After those two and a half years, Lloyd plans to retire.

In the fall, the health systems launched a newsletter called "ONE", which stands for "our new entity", in order to transform the two systems into one culture and organization. The newsletter will feature important merger announcements and give the team members a better idea of Hackensack Meridian Health’s mission, vision and values.

The combined health system will have 11 hospitals and over 120 ambulatory care, fitness and wellness centers, home health services, rehab centers and skilled nursing centers across Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Middlesex, Monmouth and Ocean counties.

Meridian Health’s net revenue is $2.1 billion and Hackensack UHN’s is $2 billion and they expect the combined organization to have $4.1 billion in net revenue. In addition, Meridian Health has 14,442 team members and Hackensack UHN has 10,824, and combined that will total to 25,266 team members.
