From the October 2014 issue of HealthCare Business News magazine
After an 18-month-long search and interview process which involved more than 200 applicants, the board of directors for Christiana Care Health System named Dr. Janice Nevin as the successor to CEO Dr. Robert Laskowski. Nevin will step into the role upon Laskowski’s retirement at the end of the year, clocking in 11 years as president and CEO. Nevin will be the health system’s first female CEO. She says she will work to improve quality outcomes, patient experience and value.
Christiana Care Health System employs nearly 11,000 people, making it one of Delaware’s top employers and a key partner in keeping the state’s residents healthy.
Although new to the CEO role, she’s not new to Christiana Care, having been with the organization for 12 years in different capacities, most recently as the chief medical officer and chief patient safety officer and prior to 2011 as the senior vice president and executive director of Christiana Care’s Wilmington campus.
Nevin moved to the U.S. from England with her family in 1970. Even as a little girl, she knew she wanted to become a doctor. She officially started her journey into health care more than three decades ago, obtaining her doctorate in medicine with honors from Jefferson Medical College in 1987. Following that step, she went on to complete a family medicine residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, also pursuing and gaining a master’s in community health services from the University of Pittsburgh. Immediately prior to her time at Christiana Care, Nevin served as the residency director for family and community medicine at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia.
DOTmed HealthCare Business News took some time to learn more about Dr. Nevin’s background as well as her plans for the future when she’s at the helm of the health system.
HCBN: How did you get involved with Christiana Care Health System?
JN: I joined Christiana Care Health System in 2002 as chair of the Department of Family and Community Medicine. Previously, I was working at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia but living in Delaware. Christiana Care’s commitment to the community was palpable on my first visit – I knew that I wanted to be part of the organization that so fully understood its mission of service.
HCBN: How does Christiana Care Health System decide which services to bring into its system?
JN: At Christiana Care, our mission – The Christiana Care Way – provides the framework for decision making. When we look at the services we need to provide and where we need to grow, we look to and partner with our community to identify those needs. Those partnerships with our neighbors help us determine how we make our decisions.
