One study presented at the conference used an amyloid-binding tracer to find out whether lower energy levels were associated with higher levels of plaque, and, by association, higher likelihood of Alzheimer's disease. In fact, Dr. Val J. Lowe, professor of radiology at Mayo Clinic Cancer Center, and his team found that there may be an association between metabolic problems and amyloid in the brains of people who haven't even yet shown signs of cognitive decline.

Going global: It's no coincidence that this year's annual meeting was set in Vancouver — in
DOTmed's SNMMI show preview, then-current president Dr. Frederic Fahey had explained that a large part of the reason the society chose to set the meeting in this city (other than the fact that it's beautiful) was because of its convenient location for Asian attendees.

Indeed, the second annual Sino-American conference held earlier this year in New Orleans by SNNMI and CSNM (Chinese Society of Nuclear Medicine) was intended to further bolster these global ties.
In keeping with this international spirit, the society has also launched the Nuclear Medicine Global Initiative, a forum that aims to bring nuclear medicine leaders around the world together to discuss and reach joint consensus on issues related to the field. The initiative's first efforts seek to help standardize care around pediatric patients.
