Only a few months after its world public debut, a new single-head SPECT system is coming to U.S. markets.

GE Healthcare said Monday its upgradable, lower cost Brivo NM615 SPECT system just received Food and Drug Administration clearance. The wide-bore device made its global bow only in late November at the Radiological Society of North America's 2011 annual meeting.

GE is positioning the single-camera system for first-time nuclear medicine camera buyers, and for busy providers who need an extra unit to handle patient overflow. The Brivo is upgradable on site to more advanced Discovery models, the NM630 and NM/CT 670, as well as to a SPECT/CT.

The system, which features the Elite NXT detector common to GE's NM600 line, can also handle bigger patients: it has a 70-centimeter bore, and its table can bear patients up to 500 pounds.

GE also says that when used with the Xeris 3 processing workstation, the system can scan patients faster and doctors can give patients up to a 50 percent lower injected dose.
