The Society of Nuclear Medicine named Thursday the recipients of the 2011-2013 SNM Wagner-Torizuka Fellowship, given to Japanese doctors for two-years of nuclear medicine and molecular imaging training in the United States.

The fellows, who receive a yearly $24,000 stipend, are Dr. Masayuki Matsuo and Dr. Tetsuya Tsujikawa.

Matsuo, who studies brain cancer and works at the Kizawa Memorial Hospital in Gifu, will do his research at the radiation oncology branch of the National Cancer Institute under Murali C. Krishna. Tsujikawa, who comes from University of Fukui in Eiheiji-cho, will focus on neurology and radiology, at the molecular imaging branch of the National Institute of Mental Health, under Dr. Robert B. Innis.

"It's very inspiring to see the number of young professionals who are so dedicated to nuclear and molecular imaging," Dr. Kanji Torizuka, professor emeritus at Kyoto University and co-founder of the program, said in a statement.

The SNM Wagner-Torizuka Fellowship is sponsored by Nihon Medi-Physics Co. Ltd., a Tokyo-based radiopharmaceutical company. Eight fellows have graduated from the program since it began in 2008.
