Siemens' Complete Orthopedic Solution Exhibited at AAOS 2006
CHICAGO, Mar 22, 2006 -- According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, one in seven Americans suffers from an orthopedic impairment, making it one of the most common reasons to seek medical attention. As the demand for orthopedic services in the United States remains high and is projected to grow over the next decade, orthopedic surgeons are charged with delivering the highest quality of care to an ever-increasing number of patients. Siemens Medical Solutions will demonstrate how it is driving clinical and financial outcomes in orthopedics at the 73rd annual meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), being held March 22-26 in Chicago (booth # 3661).
"The changing orthopedic demographics of older and larger patients and the need for less invasive diagnostic and treatment procedures drives the development of innovative solutions," said Tom McCausland, president, Siemens Medical Solutions USA. "Siemens raises the bar of patient care, providing cutting-edge technologies that enable surgeons to not only increase throughput and workflow, but also care for diverse patients and conditions."

Marrying advanced imaging and information technologies, Siemens' comprehensive portfolio of orthopedic solutions supports patients across the care continuum, from pre-operative through post-operative and rehabilitation. These technologies are designed to accommodate all types of patients, including pediatric, elderly, obese and claustrophobic patients. In addition, Siemens' innovative orthopedic applications enable surgeons to improve outcomes in procedures such as joint replacement, spinal surgery, sports medicine and fracture repair.
At AAOS 2006, Siemens will highlight its array of orthopedic technologies that are designed to help physicians improve diagnostic confidence and provide better therapy.
These systems include:
-- Digital radiography, providing exceptional image quality - The AXIOM MULTIX M features a mobile flat panel detector offering digital imaging virtually anywhere in the exam room. Patients can be safely imaged while on a bed, stretcher, wheelchair or imaging table. The mobile detector can withstand a direct weight of 330 lbs., making weight bearing exams easy to perform.
-- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ideal for routine orthopedic applications - The MAGNETOM Espree(TM) with Tim(R) (Total imaging matrix), the world's only 70 cm bore 1.5 Tesla (1.5T) MRI system, is ideally suited for all orthopedic applications. Now even the largest athlete can benefit from 1.5T image quality and applications. Tim technology enables flexible coil combinations to encompass local high resolution imaging to large anatomical coverage up to 205 cm (6'9"), while other systems require the radiologist to change coils and reposition the patient three times for a whole-body MRI procedure.
