“This is a goal of mine to research and implement this technology in the very near future,” says Vorherr. “If successful, it gives us the ability to go farther from the hospital and not worry about coming back [to the hospital to send images]. There are a lot of benefits to sending wireless.”
Deaton of Viztek explains that wireless for X-ray image acquisition is not ready for mobile environments due to higher costs and more effort — wireless and cellular service is generally very poor in hard-to-reach areas.

“There are only a few wireless acquisition devices — we have one — and they are way too expensive for this market,” Deaton says. “Wireless transmission of images, once they are acquired, from the truck to the radiologist is a huge market struggle.”
To tackle this problem, Viztek’s technology makes the traditional cellular and wireless data card in a laptop useful. The technology from Viztek uses satellite software to send X-ray images, which are extremely large files.
“Our compression overcomes [bad cellular and wireless service] so it’s a market changer,” says Deaton.
The company’s software also encrypts the images, making it HIPAA-compliant.
Based in the rural parts of Texas, PDQ Mobile X-Ray Services recently purchased Viztek’s software for its mobile units. The company, still in its infancy, attributes its significant and rapid growth to Viztek’s software.
“This is one of the best decisions that we have made in starting a mobile radiography service,” says Dennis Whitsell of PDQ Mobile X-Ray Services. “When you have the right tools, it’s easy to do a great job exceeding your customers’ expectations.”
