CCHIT continues its programs

On March 2, the Office of the National Coordinator (ONC) released a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) about its plans to establish certification programs for testing and certification of health information technology (Health IT), both a temporary and permanent certification program. (See, DM 11855). Some media reports have stated that CCHIT has suspended its certification programs until obtaining certification under the NPRM program; however, that is not the case.

Sue Reber, a spokesperson for CCHIT, told DOTmed that at the time the NPRM was published, CCHIT had open applications from vendors who were ready to complete testing in both the CCHIT Certified® Comprehensive and Modular certification programs to meet the criteria of the ONC's IFR, stage one. Reber said CCHIT took the opportunity to consider and analyze what the next steps would be in light of the NPRM. CCHIT explored the option of suspending testing until the final rule was imposed, and accreditation complete. Toward the end of last week, the vendors with open applications indicated to CCHIT that they would like to continue to pursue testing. Although knowing CCHIT was not accredited under the NPRM's programs as yet, nonetheless the vendors expressed confidence that the organization soon would be. At the beginning of this week, after discussion with CCHIT's trustees, the organization decided not to suspend testing, but would continue to work with the vendors while keeping abreast of the developments in the certification process. CCHIT plans to submit an application for certification with the ONC as soon as possible.

CCHIT will be presenting a "Town Call" March 18, accessible through phone or Web, during which the organization will be discussing various issues on certification, including future plans for the organization.
