When and how do you reward hard work?

by Philip F. Jacobus, CEO | April 08, 2015
If you know me, then you know that I routinely work twelve or thirteen hour days — and during working hours I am very focused on business. However, these days I try to relax and recharge my batteries.

If you are reading my blog today, it may be because the title caught your attention. I suspect you are curious to know how I define hard work and how I define reward.

I push myself now but when I was younger I pushed myself much harder. In those days I was in competition with myself to work harder and work more. I had something to prove.

However, I found that when I worked too many hours my judgement was clouded. Because I did not allow myself the freedom — and time — to get some perspective on the different business situations that I was involved in, I lacked perspective. That lack of perspective resulted in regrettable mistakes that cost money.

Nowadays I still work hard, but I take time off with my wife to smell the roses, too. Today I am on holiday in Italy with my wife and we are doing just that!

In addition I have learned to be considerate of my coworkers as well. They deserve to benefit from what I have learned and helping them to grow will result in a better bottom line.

So take care of yourself and your team. There are no better people to invest in!
