Michael Friebe's RSNA review - a private, opinionated and subjective report

December 18, 2014
Michael Friebe, PhD., is a friend to DOTmed, serves on our editorial advisory board,is an accomplished college professor, inventor, longtime RSNA attendee and an observant and opinionated guy. I enjoyed his review of RSNA and wanted to share it with our DOTmed audience. - Phil Jacobus, president of DOTmed.com, Inc.

Statistics first - 100th RSNA, my 23rd (23 percent attendance and I am not even 50 yet, but soon! I expect presents and congratulation E-mails on December 26th). Below table shows my activities (total of 47.7km walk + 5.65km swim) and other not-so important facts about my stay this time.

I also stayed at the Intercontinental for probably the 15th time in a row - the reason is exclusively the fantastic pool on the 13th floor that I visit every morning (see picture).

It also paid off that I flew back on Wednesday, since this was the only day that Lufthansa flew without any strike problems - Germany is the country with the most transport related strikes this year, ahead of even France and Italy!

The anniversary show also had a historical review in the Lakeside building. The first CT (EMI) and US (Siemens) among others were shown (see below) and attendees could kind of meet Mr. Roentgen in person. The poster exhibition was also in that building combined with an impressive number of E-posters. I spent quite a bit of time there, but admit that my attendance of the oral presentations was negligible. For me, RSNA is a show to meet clinicians as well as industry staff to discuss new trends and to inquire about feasibility of my own ideas or promote the products / services of the companies that I am involved in. Scientifically, there are better conferences covering my personal scientific interests.

The booth setup of Siemens and Philips seemed to be pretty much identical to last year's. GE was a bit confusing to me, as it covered several different areas and was not intuitive to me. This time Toshiba was next to Philips in one building and GE and Siemens were located in the South building. Hitachi was placed at a very unfavorable location at the far end corner of that building - I hope they are better situated next year. Apparently, the location is determined by RSNA and there is only limited say of the companies.
