Michael Friebe's RSNA review - a private, opinionated and subjective report

December 18, 2014

Talking about China - there were two more companies offering MRI systems and one older one even with a 2T system. I still remember the Siemens Krenikon system from 15 years ago with that field strength ...

HYBRID: The molecular hybrid products were complimented by a 90cm bore PET/CT from Toshiba. Sedecal showed a PET/MRI for small animals - interesting! I'm particularly interested to know whether they actually find a lot of customers for it.

CT: I just checked my 2013 report and compared the newly shown CT products - no changes or at least no apparent change this year at the big ones. I did however see quite a few smaller companies offering 3-D cone beam CT systems for small field of view imaging (extremities, head). So there must be a need and a market for that. I did not see many of these installed in Central Europe ... and I know a large number of sites.

Ultrasound: Was not really of any interest to me in the past years. However, with my new role and my new research interests, that has changed. It was very exciting to see that almost all of the big vendors, and also some smaller niche-product providers offered tablet systems that are capable of the standard procedures and even cardiac exams (limited of course) for prices at or below € 15.000

Image Guided Procedures: My topic, but unfortunately not a lot of new things even though everyone seems to believe that this is the future. Ultrasound guidance for biopsy and needle placements is of course an established method just as breast biopsies are.
