Mercy has finalized the acquisition of the former Via Christi Hospital in Pittsburg, Kansas, marking the completion of a transition that began months ago.
The facility has officially been renamed Mercy Hospital Pittsburg, becoming the third Mercy hospital in Kansas, joining Mercy Hospital Columbus and Mercy Specialty Hospital – Southeast Kansas, which is located in Galena.
Jeremy Drinkwitz, president of Mercy Joplin communities, welcomed the new staff members to the organization, noting the importance of continuing the hospital’s legacy of healthcare in the Pittsburg area. “We couldn’t be more excited to officially call them co-workers at Mercy Hospital Pittsburg,” Drinkwitz said. “We intend to hit the ground running and get started on the work of not only continuing but expanding the legacy of healthcare in the community.”

Mercy operates multiple clinics and hospitals in the surrounding region, including locations in Joplin, Carthage, and Webb City, Missouri, as well as clinics in Pittsburg. The organization also works with leading partners like Mayo Clinic and Microsoft to integrate innovative methods of healthcare delivery.
Drinkwitz stressed that Mercy’s goal is to listen to the needs of the local community and grow services accordingly. “We want to ensure we are providing the right care where it’s needed so patients can stay close to home,” he said.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony and welcome reception was held on Sept. 11 to celebrate the hospital’s integration into the Mercy system.
Mercy is one of the largest healthcare systems in the U.S., operating more than 50 hospitals and 900 outpatient facilities.
