Noona patient software app
Varian has acquired Noona Healthcare, a developer of a cloud-based mobile service app that captures patient-reported outcomes (PROs) and enables staff to communicate with patients directly.
The purchase is the most recent in a series carried out by the California-based radiotherapy provider to expand its portfolio, and equips its clients with the ability to proactively manage patient symptoms to improve clinical outcomes and reduce hospitalizations and emergency room visits using the Noona patient software app.
“This is the latest step in Varian's strategy to become a global leader in multidisciplinary, integrated cancer care solutions, with a strong a focus on patient care,” Sukhveer Singh, vice president of cancer care management at Varian, told HCB News. “The acquisition allows Varian to take an active role in improving the quality of life of cancer patients by monitoring their symptoms, and through surveillance of potential recurrence or progression of metastatic disease.”

Implementation of PROs in cancer care have been proved in randomized control trials to enhance chances of survival by shifting care from a reactive to proactive state, with specific benefits including early and systematic recognition of severe symptoms and relapses prior to the onset of severe or deadly complications; enhanced toxicity observations and management for better treatment outcomes; better dose optimization; and optimal treatment duration.
The Noona patient software app is designed with an intuitive user interface that encourages a high rate of adoption and adherence over long periods of time, a feature that Varian plans to combine with its 360 Oncology SaaS platform to allow patients to actively engage with care teams through treatment, recovery and post-treatment care.
In addition, real-world, evidence-driven services, such as PROs, of the app will be extended to other stakeholders by Varian to enable outcome studies, clinical trials and digital therapeutics.
“The acquisition will expand the reach of Noona Healthcare’s technology by making it more broadly available to the clinical community through Varian’s global marketing and sales channels,” said Singh. “Varian also will introduce Noona Healthcare’s portfolio of real-world, evidence-driven services to key stakeholders, including life science and pharma companies, to collect patient-reported outcomes (PRO) data that enable outcomes studies, clinical trials and digital therapeutics. Our ability to uniquely capture a database of structured, patient-reported symptoms and treatment outcomes will drive these services.”
The acquisition is one of many carried out by Varian this year, with others including

Mobius Medical,
