Deal valued at $5.7 million.
Accuray Inc. said Monday that it would buy Morphormics Inc., a company that designs software for planning prostate radiation treatments, for approximately $5.7 million.
Accuray said it has been licensing Morphormics' technology since 2008, shortly before the product was first released commercially in 2009 as part of an Accuray treatment planning system.
Morphormics' autocontouring software uses mathematical models to create individual 3-D atlases of patients' organs based on CT and other medical images. Its first product, MxStruct/Pelvis, can identify and mark the boundaries of the prostate so radiation oncologists can better target the organ while sparing surrounding healthy tissue.

The company was spun off from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2001 by professors Edward Chaney, Stephen Pizer and Sarang Joshi.
With the deal, Accuray said it would extend autocontouring abilities for its CyberKnife and TomoTherapy systems. Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Accuray acquired TomoTherapy last year.
