Merge Healthcare said Tuesday it's teaming up with AG Mednet to provide software and services for imaging labs and drug and device companies using medical imaging in their clinical trials.

Under the deal, Merge will integrate its Clinical Information Management System with AG Mednet's delivery network, which lets labs share CT, MRI and other images scrubbed of patient identifying information with their sponsors and other investigators.

"This alliance creates the first complete infrastructure and feature set required by both commercial and academic core labs to carry out all the necessary logistics in support of clinical trials," Dr. Jeffrey Popma, an associate professor of medicine with Harvard Medical School in Boston, said in a statement.

Merge first unveiled CIMS in 2010, which the Chicago-based company says integrates electronic data capture, PACS, image analysis and transport technologies. The platform lets technologists upload images, radiologists analyze them with 3D tools and clinical investigators assess trial progress, Merge said.

Boston-based AG Mednet, which was founded in 2005, said it's one of the world's biggest image collection platforms, and has more than 10,000 registered users in 58 countries.
