Corewell Health, the largest health system in Michigan, will close its Spectrum Health Kelsey Hospital in October, saying the 60-year-old hospital has become outdated, as utilization declined and more modern care alternatives emerged nearby.

In June, the $12 million, state-of-the-art, 15,800 square foot, Corewell Health Lakeview Care Center opened just a few minutes away from the hospital. The center’s walk-in clinic is open every day, including weekends.

“We are committed to providing high-quality health care for our community,” Andrea Leslie, president of Corewell Health’s Spectrum Health Kelsey Hospital, said. “Our new, modern Lakeview Care Center provides expert-level care the community expects from Corewell Health.”

Critical patients seen in the Kelsey emergency department have been transferred for higher levels of care for nearly a decade, according to the hospital, most to other nearby Corewell Health hospitals.

Opened in 1962, the Lakeview-based hospital was challenged with years of declining patient volumes and aging infrastructure. Corewell Health has plans to commemorate the legacy of the Kelsey hospital and further demonstrate its continued commitment to the Lakeview community.

All hospital team members will receive help finding another role with Corewell Health, according to the health system.

Corewell Health was created in February 2022 following a merger between Spectrum Health and Beaumont Health, two Michigan-based nonprofit systems. It is based in Grand Rapids and Southfield and operates 22 hospitals and 305 outpatient locations.
